The English Language Teachers’ Association of India (ELTAI) is the oldest teachers association in India. ELTAI was founded on August 7, 1974 by the late Padamshri S Natarajan, a noted educationist. It celebrates its 50th
Golden Jubilee Celebration this year. From 3 members, ELTAI has grown into a large association of more than 5,000 teachers. The beauty of the association is that it works on assimilative ideology in which teachers from schools to colleges and universities are given equal platform to share their ideas and express their views and practices for innovative teaching practices.
The association’s journal, The Journal of English Language Teaching (JELT
), started before the association, in 1965. Beyond JELT
, ELTAI also has an e-journal. The ELTAI website provides useful links, training manuals, and resources in teaching English and also gives access to various internet tools. Worksheets on different skills are also offered to members through the website. Just recently, the association has started offering consultancy services for members. The association has six Special Interest Groups (SIGs), viz Teacher Development, ESP, Literature, Evaluation, Computer Technology and ELT in Rural Areas.
The association has 53 chapters all over India. Individual chapters sponsor two of their members for participation in the annual conference which keeps moving from one city to another. Apart from the annual conference of ELTAI, the chapters hold their own conferences, seminars and workshops on pertinent themes, using their local resource persons. This past year, there was also a national workshop held in collaboration with IATEFL, UK on Mobile Learning in which all the nominees from various chapters were sponsored.
