TRANSCRIPT:

Hello. I’m Sandy Briggs, TESOL President. This month I would like to talk about TESOL Publications, which currently offers 90 books for ELT educators. These books provide up-to-date information in such areas as standards, technology, language learning methodologies, classroom practices, assessment, research, teacher education, and professional development.

Let’s take a closer look at one of these books, the second edition of CALL Environments: Research, Practice, and Critical Issues, which came out in September 2007. Computer-assisted language learning, or CALL, techniques are being adopted by ELT educators in all parts of the world. The rapid growth in technology has helped to generate various technology tools such as lap top computers, PDAs, and iPODs, just to name a few.

The first edition of this book, which came out in 1999, focused on CALL in second language acquisition; the second edition continues this emphasis including identification of new tools, discussion of new research, and proposal of practical applications. This new edition discusses topics such as visual literacy, critical thinking, and creativity, and addresses content from the revised National Education Technology Standards for Students.

To find out more about CALL Environments: Research, Practice, and Critical Issues or any of the other 89 books currently available at TESOL, go to www.tesol.org. Then click on the button called Bookstore. You will be able to get detailed information about all of TESOL’s books. You may even decide to order a few at special member rates!
I’ve enjoyed talking to you through these podcasts during my presidential year. Next month, be looking for a podcast from Shelley Wong, who becomes TESOL President on April 4, 2008, at the annual business meeting at the TESOL convention in New York City.
