David Schwarzer, Candidate
TESOL Board of Directors, 2018–2021

David Schwarzer, Montclair State University, Montclair, New Jersey, USA, is a 2018 candidate for the TESOL Board of Directors. If elected, he will serve from 2018 to 2021.

Candidate’s Statement

I believe the biggest need of our organization is to create conditions for the empowerment of all its members - empowered organization members will create grassroots efforts that will affect TESOL in positive ways. It is also important to foster a culture of accountability, where assessment data is gathered and analyzed on a regular basis and used to inform the vision and mission of the organization. The development and implementation of streamlined policies for effective and efficient day-to-day operations is another area that needs attention.

As an international organization, we should aim to expand the global/local partnerships and education initiatives already in place. I will help to rethink our global engagement to provide a more up-to-date vision of the organization’s needs in the XXI century. Although TESOL has been my academic home, I have also been an active member in other national and international organizations (National Council of Teachers of English, International Literacy Association, American Educational Research Association, etc.). I will be able to serve as a bridge between TESOL’s agenda and the agendas of other organizations.

Finally, the role of a member in the Board of Directors of TESOL is diverse in terms of its breath and depth of areas. I will use my multilingual and transnational academic experiences, skills and leadership style to further the mission of TESOL in the national and international arenas.
