TESOL Applauds Newly Introduced 2017 DREAM Act

by David Cutler | 08/04/2017
TESOL International Association strongly supports the recently introduced bipartisan 2017 Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, and is hopeful that the legislation will provide a long-overdue pathway to citizenship for the many undocumented residents of the United States, including the more than 800,000 recipients of the current Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). For many years, TESOL has strongly advocated for the passage of fair and reasonable citizenship opportunities for undocumented DREAMers, many of whom were English learners and have been highly successful students.

The leadership of Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC), co-sponsors of the DREAM Act, is greatly appreciated, and TESOL now calls on the U.S. Congress to pass this critical piece of legislation and for the president to sign it into law. DREAMers make significant contributions to the economy, the military, and academia, and are poised to become leaders in their communities. Passage of the DREAM Act would ensure that DREAMers across the United States can continue to live, work, and study in the communities that they have made home throughout their young lives.
