TESOL Installs New President, Board Members

TESOL International Association, the world’s leading professional association for English language educators, recently installed Luciana C. de Oliveira as its new president, along with three new board members, at the TESOL International Convention & English Language Expo, held 27–30 March 2018 in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

De Oliveira serves as professor and chair in the Department of Teaching and Learning within the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Miami, Florida, USA. Her research focuses on issues related to teaching English language learners at the K-12 level, including the role of language in learning, and teacher education, advocacy, and social justice. Her research examines scaffolding in elementary classrooms and multimodal representation in picture books. She will serve a one-year term as the association’s 53rd president.


Additionally, Deborah Healy of the University of Oregon, Oregon, USA, was installed as president-elect. She serves as an emeritus faculty member in the Language Teaching Studies Masters of Arts Program within the College of Arts of Sciences.


Other newly installed board members were Christel Broady, Georgetown College, Kentucky, USA; Katherine Lobo, Newton Public Schools, Massachusetts, USA; and Joe McVeigh, St. Michael’s College, Vermont, USA.


After serving as the association’s 52nd president, Ester de Jong, University of Florida, Florida, USA, moved to the post of past president. Officers and board members whose terms expired in March were Dudley Reynolds, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar; Misty Adoniou, University of Canberra, Australia; John Schmidt, Texas Intensive English Program, Texas, USA; and Kyungsook Yeum, Sookmyung Women’s University, South Korea.
