TESOL Member Resolution o TESOL Member Resolution on United States K-12 Standards (1993) United States "Chapter 1" Funding (1993)

Whereas TESOL represents the interest and concerns of language minority students in grades K-12 in the United States, and

Whereas access to an equitable and quality education for these students depends upon the development of standards regarding appropriate curriculum, the learning environment, the delivery of comprehensive services, and equitable and unbiased assessment, and

Whereas the TESOL Committee on Professional Standards and the TESOL Task Force on K-12 Standards have begun some preliminary work in this area but urgently need the time and resources to provide more extensive, fully developed standards, and

Whereas other professional organizations, such as National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) have completed or are making significant progress in the development of standard for their disciplines;

Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of TESOL that TESOL be charged to prepare extensive, full developed standards for K-12 ESOL students of the sort being developed by other academic disciplines in the United States, and

Be It Further Resolved that TESOL dedicate time and resources to this project to be sure that such standards are of the highest quality and are made available as soon as possible.
