Affiliates are independent, autonomous associations affiliated with TESOL and each other as members of the TESOL community. TESOL affiliates offer English language educators professional information and support within their geographic regions. TESOL affiliates have the opportunity to improve language teaching by fostering the exchange of ideas, resources, information, newsletters, and reflective experiences through online discussions, partnerships, conferences, and workshops. Affiliates meet online via electronic discussion lists, and during workshops and meetings at the annual TESOL convention. TESOL affiliates are lead by the Affiliate Leadership Council (ALC). The ALC represents affiliates and works with others in TESOL to address affiliate issues and concerns.
Affiliates have been a part of the organizational structure of TESOL since 1969, when nine associations applied for and were granted affiliate status. As of July 2008, TESOL was affiliated with 97 independent associations with total membership of more than 47,000 professionals. 11 organizations are located in Asia and Oceania, 18 in Europe and Eurasia, 12 in Central and South America, 8 in the Middle East and Africa, and 48 in North America.
Please note that TESOL membership does not include membership in any regional TESOL affiliate, nor does membership in a TESOL affiliate include membership in the worldwide TESOL association.
