Practices that Support English Language Learners in Rich CCSS-Aligned Instruction (B-3)

Overview

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) raise the bar for all student learning, but especially for English learners (ELs). Teachers need to understand the increased language demands and content sophistication required to meet the standards.  In this workshop, the presenters explore the challenges and opportunities that the CCSS present for ELs.

In this workshop, participants

  • examine the critical role language plays in the new CCSS for ELs
  • explore an in-depth middle school exemplar from Stanford University’s Understanding Language initiative that shows the specific teaching strategies teachers need to support ELs’ access and success with authentic CCSS-aligned complex text 
  • unpack the metacognitive processes teachers and students need to support and reinforce ELs’ learning
  • view videos to explore ways to engage ELs in high levels of discourse in language arts or ESL classrooms
  • develop lessons that are CCSS aligned  
  • discuss formative assessment techniques that track ELs’ progress toward meeting the CCSS

About the Workshop Leader

Lydia Stack is well known internationally as a teacher educator and author. She is a founding member of Stanford University’s Understanding Language initiative on Language, Literacy, and Learning in the era of the Common Core. As a past-president of TESOL, she helped write standards for students and pre-service teacher education programs.
