Preparing Advanced Nonnative Speakers of English for Writing at the College Level (C-6)

Overview

Participants will explore ways to prepare students at the high school and community college level for the writing demands at the next level of their postsecondary education. They will investigate topics such as the writing process, writing assignment design, and responding to student writings as they relate to writing for academic purposes. Participants will also be invited to share their experiences preparing students for writing at the college level.

What Will I Learn?

In this workshop, participants will
  • review current practices in postsecondary composition
  • dissect the stages of the writing process and how they intersect with writing assignments
  • explore methods for responding to and evaluating student writing
  • design a multiple-stage writing assignment
  • develop an activity for teaching students to connect with academic support opportunities and manage their own learning

About the Workshop Leader

Kate Hahn has worked with ESOL learners in higher education for almost 20 years. She is currently the director of the Center for Academic Writing at Northeastern Illinois University. Dr. Hahn earned a master of arts in TESL and a doctorate in educational psychology with a certificate in second language acquisition and teacher education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
