The Five Ps of Effective Leadership and Professional Development

Overview

In order to facilitate changing classrooms, leaders must be prepared to support teachers. This session focuses in five Ps of effective leadership and professional development:
  • Purpose
  • Personalization
  • Priority
  • Passion
  • Professionalization
You will examine each P in depth to help you develop effective leadership skills.

Workshop Outcomes

The workshop will be divided into five two-hour sessions, each with its own outcomes:
  • Purpose: You will identify characteristics of effective leaders and consider your personal strengths and weaknesses in relationship to the characteristics. You will then draft a plan to build these characteristics in your own leadership development.
  • Personalization: You will formulate culturally appropriate ways for personalizing the characteristics of effective leadership to support teacher development and growth.
  • Priority: You will learn the steps in strategic planning that allow you to place priority on supporting teachers within their language programs. You will then draft a plan for how to engage in strategic planning in your program.
  • Passion: You will use Dörnyei’s four-stage framework of motivational teaching practices to facilitate the development of teacher motivation and passion for language teaching.
  • Professionalization: You will list five ways that teachers can participate in reflecting on their own professional development and select from 13 tools that will help them reflect on professionalization within your language teaching program. 

About the Workshop Leader

Neil J Anderson is a Professor in the Department of English Language Teaching & Learning at Brigham Young University—Hawaii. His research interests include motivation in language teaching and learning, second language reading, language learner strategies, learner self-assessment, and ELT leadership development.

Professor Anderson is a co-editor with Christine Coombe, Lauren Stephensen, and Mary Lou McCloskey of Leadership in English Language Teaching and Learning (The University of Michigan Press, 2008). He is also the author or co-editor of three teacher education texts in second language reading: Exploring Second Language Reading: Issues and Strategies (Heinle/Thomson, 1999), Practical English Language Teaching: Reading (McGraw Hill, 2008) and L2 Reading Research and Instruction: Crossing the Boundaries (The University of Michigan Press, 2009). In addition, he is the author of an EFL reading series, ACTIVE Skills for Reading, 3rd edition (National Geographic Learning/Cengage, 2013).

Professor Anderson served as president of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages from 2001 to 2002. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of The International Research Foundation (TIRF) from 2002 to 2008, serving as the president of the board from 2004 to 2006. He has been a Fulbright Teaching and Research Scholar in Costa Rica (2002–2003) and in Guatemala (2009–2010). Professor Anderson is the 2014 recipient of the prestigious James Alatis Award for Service to TESOL.
