More About This Course

Participants will get hands-on practice with online tools, techniques, best practices, and strategies for teaching reading and writing online through discussion, discovery, and incorporation into individual and collaborative projects that are geared toward their specific student population and teaching environment. Through experiential activities and active participation, participants will share ideas and applications of the tools and techniques used in online learning such as discussion forums, document sharing sites, and other Web 2.0 collaborative environments that help to develop important vocabulary, reading and writing skills.

Course-Specific Requirements

It is expected that participants have MS-Word (XP or higher) installed on their computers.  Other materials with be Web-based and available electronically, i.e. through links to Web sites.

What Will I Learn?

  • Web-based tools for vocabulary and reading development—open source (free) web-based books, news stories, informative articles, and other reading materials in text and audio formats; online dictionaries, thesauri, encyclopedias, picture dictionaries, and glossing tools; concordancers, graphic organizers, free text-to-speech software, and reading supported by audio and text
  • Web-based lesson plans for reading
  • Web-based collaborative learning tools – Wikis, blogs, document sharing sites
  • Uses of Microsoft Word’s AutoShapes, WordArt, tables, font and text effects, and column layout to create class projects (a class newsletter) and publishing students’ work
  • Uses of Microsoft Word’s reviewing, commenting, and track changes features to support the writing process in the classroom
  • Web sites to use in teaching writing, including online writing labs
  • Web-based tools for assessing reading/vocabulary and writing—including puzzlemakers, quizmakers, matchmakers, and rubrics 

About the Instructor

Sandy Wagner has been involved in ESL as an instructor and ESL online course designer and facilitator for over 20 years. She has also facilitated technology and second language acquisition workshops and an online Reading certification course for the Florida Department of Education.  In her current position as Assistant Professor for the Defense Language Institute, she works in the Language Technology Evaluation and Application Division, providing training in the use of technology resources and their applications for second language learning. She also has trained and mentored instructors in second language acquisition instruction, pedagogy, and technology applications. Sandy holds an MAEd in eEducation and Instructional Design and is the past chair of TESOL's CALL Interest Section.  Sandy co-designed and facilitated the Electronic Village Online (EVO) course on teaching with PowerPoint. She has also created and facilitated online courses in Blackboard, Sakai, and Desire2Learn.
