This course takes a hands-on approach to introduce participants to tools and techniques that teachers can use to support their campus-based courses with online materials. It is designed primarily for teachers who would like to incorporate online learning into their face-to-face courses on campus. During the course participants construct a Web site (Wiki) to be used for teaching and learning, offering students and teachers a space to interact and collaborate as a class. Each week participants can customize their learning experience to their own teaching and learning needs by choosing to construct projects from modules, such as social networking (Web2.0) tools, free Web templates, and presentation software. Each module is supported by readings that the participants choose from to post required summaries and reactions. During the four-week session, participants will lead discussions, share and peer-review their projects, and incorporate the elements they learned and the projects they constructed on their interactive, collaborative Web site.
What Will I Learn?
- set up, share, and peer-review interactive and collaborative Web spaces (Wikis) for learners and class projects, incorporating audio and video materials, photos, links, and discussions
- create, share, and peer-review an animated slide show (in MS-PowerPoint or equivalent presentation software) to teach a lesson or concept OR create, share, and peer-review a social networking site for teaching
- create, share, and peer-review assessment instruments, e.g. rubrics, checklists, quizzes/exercises, or vocabulary flashcards from Web templates
- create, share, and peer-review an audio or video application
Course-specific materials: In this workshop participants will primarily use materials that are available electronically, i.e. through links to Web sites. It is recommended to have presentation software (MS-PowerPoint XP or higher, OpenOffice or other presentation software) installed. To record audio or video files, a headset with microphone and Webcam is needed.
