More About This Course

Although language teachers understand that the most significant skill for many learners may be speaking, a distinct challenge in teaching ESL/EFL online is working with speaking and real-time communication. This course addresses current capabilities in real-time voice communication over the Internet. We explore ways to make this aspect of language teaching come alive in real-time in an online context. We begin by gaining background by readings in this area. During group hands-on work, we examine and practice with useful applications for real-time speaking. These include voice email, voice discussion boards, web conferencing, and instant messaging/conferencing with voice using Yahoo! Messenger and Skype. Each application is considered individually in a hands-on approach that will enable you to work on speaking skills in real-time with your students worldwide.

What Will I Learn?

  • survey and discuss current capabilities in real-time communication online
  • download and practice using voice-enabled messenger services such as Yahoo! Messenger, and VoIP application Skype
  • research and report on sophisticated web conferencing software and other real-time virtual environments
