If you are pursuing TESOL’s Principles and Practices of Online Teaching Certificate, you must take PP 100, which is the prerequisite for the program’s other courses.
Those who are not pursuing the certificate but want to take selected courses in the program may apply for an exemption to TESOL’s Education Programs Department.
Required Materials
To apply for an exemption, please submit the following materials:
(1) Provide two of the following:
- A Web page you have designed (send the URL or the files)
- A sound recording you have made using Audacity, PureVoice, or some other widely available software
- A Web-based exercise you developed using Quia, Hot Potatoes, or some other widely available software (send the URL or the files)
(2). Please explain in general terms how preparing materials and pedagogy for e-learning differs from preparing materials and pedagogy for face-to-face classroom learning (maximum 60 words).
TESOL will reply to you within 5 business days.
Criteria for Awarding Exemption
TESOL’s Education Programs Department and the Professional Development Committee will use the following criteria to determine if participants shall be exempt from PP 100.
Participants should
- understand basic concepts in e-learning: the nature of the online environment, surfing basics.
- know Internet guides and glossaries and have acquired basic Internet and Web terminology.
- know basic techniques for doing Internet searches with Google and other search engines.
- understand and practice good netiquette skills.
- understand and apply standards and assessment criteria in online contexts.
- understand and apply good page design techniques in creating a web page.
- know online commercial resources and how they typically deliver ESL/EFL content.
- have created simple exercises and activities with these online tools: editing and word processing software, making a Web page, creating online exercises, sound recording.
- have developed a formal class project using one of the tools listed above in an exercise or activity for students.
