TESOL Core Certificate Program

ASU logo with full titleIn partnership with Arizona State University, TESOL International Association offers The TESOL Core Certificate Program (TCCP), a 140-hour blended training program providing a foundation in the theory and practice of English language teaching (ELT). The certificate program provides a summary of the core knowledge of the TESOL field to support individuals in enhancing their professional practice and careers in serving the needs of English language learners (ELLs). Candidates are able to choose an adult or young learner elective and are expected to complete an in-person practicum. The TCCP is aligned to TESOL's Standards for Short-Term TEFL/TESL Certificate Programs

Who Should Attend?

The program is designed for current or prospective teachers and administrators, worldwide, who have little to no formal training in ELT. Participants can focus on teaching adults, in English as a Second Language (ESL) and/or English as a Foreign Language (EFL) environments, or on teaching young learners, in EFL environments.

Program Requirements

To earn the TESOL Core Certificate, participants must successfully complete three parts:
  • 60-hour (6-week) online foundation course on the fundamentals of TESOL
  • 60-hour (6-week) online specialty course on teaching adults or young learners (elective)
  • 20-hour teaching practicum
    • 10 hours of in-person classroom observation
    • 10 hours of in-person practice teaching

Time Commitment

The 140 hours of required course work and practicum components can be completed in 6 to 11 months. All courses are asynchronous. A minimum of 10 hours per week should be devoted to the online course work. With that being said, students are expected to check-in on the class at least every other day, if not daily.

Grading and Assessment

The TESOL Core Certificate Program, as well as the online courses that make up the core of the program, are organized on a pass (satisfactory completion of all requirements)/no pass (unsatisfactory) basis. Practicing English language teachers who want to expand their knowledge and explore an area of expertise in depth may consider applying for the TESOL Certificate: Advanced Practitioner.
