Course Description
Fundamentals of TESOL is the foundation course for the TESOL Core Certificate Program and a prerequisite for the other courses. This course provides general theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for prospective and newly practicing ESL/EFL teachers. It familiarizes the participants with theoretical and practical aspects of language, language learning, teaching methodology, and classroom practice.
About the Instructors
Lead Instructor
Jan Dormer has more than 25 years of ESL/EFL experience. She has taught English learners and teacher trainees in Indonesia (8 years), Brazil (5 years, in addition to growing up there!), and Kenya (1 year). She has taught all ages of English learners, in many types of school settings.
Jan has a doctorate in education from the University of Toronto, in curriculum teaching and learning with a concentration in TESOL teacher development. She also has a master’s degree in TESOL from Ball State University, in Muncie, Indiana, and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Asbury College, in Wilmore, Kentucky.
Her areas of interest in TESOL include teacher education, online learning, and improving communication and collaboration between native and nonnative English-speaking teachers, which was the focus of her dissertation research. She is also a member of TESOL’s Professional Development Committee.
Jan is currently Assistant Professor of TESOL at Messiah College in Pennsylvania, U.S., teaching in both graduate and undergraduate TESOL programs.
Assistant Instructor
Mira Malupa-Kim has been in the TESOL profession for 16 years. She taught ESL/EFL at university-based intensive English programs and government institutions in Texas, California, and language institutes in South Korea and the Philippines. She served as a language training supervisor at the Foreign Service Institute. She has been working for the ETS Online Scoring Program (TOEFL) for seven years. Currently, she is a visiting professor at The University of Texas at San Antonio.
Mira has a doctorate in education with TESOL concentration and a master’s degree in TESOL from Alliant International University-San Diego, where she also taught graduate courses. She holds an RSA/Cambridge CELTA certificate from St. Giles International-San Francisco. Her research interests include teacher discourse, assessment (speaking), and language transfer. Like Jan, she is also a TESOL Professional Development Committee member.
