Statement of Purpose
The TESOL Intercultural Communication Interest Section (ICIS) promotes intercultural understanding in particular environments such as education and business, supports research in intercultural communication, recommends specific methodologies for teaching intercultural communication, and promotes intercultural communication classes and courses in TEFL/ESL programs.
Goals
- Promote interest in the study of intercultural communication
- Encourage research and the development of ESOL materials in intercultural communication
- Advocate for course work in intercultural communication and understanding as a required component of TEFL/ESL programs
- Advocate for a course in intercultural communication and understanding at secondary and postsecondary levels of instruction
- Encourage TESOL members to prepare and deliver presentations on intercultural communication at professional conferences
- Establish a training consultancy to disseminate information regarding intercultural communication to TESOL members and the larger community
