Tips for Recruiters Using the Career Center

TESOL's Career Center draws a broad, diverse body of job seekers in many ESL/EFL fields worldwide. The following tips will help ensure that your ad is available to your target audience and will make your ad easier for a global audience to understand:

Comply with TESOL's Terms and Conditions for Recruiters.

TESOL's Terms and Conditions for Advertisers prohibit discrimination. This means, among other things, that your ad text may not require applicants to be male or female, a particular age or age range, of a particular religion, or native speakers of English (although requiring a high level of proficiency is acceptable). These rules apply regardless of where your institution is located or any exceptions your institution may have had to similar rules in other settings. TESOL takes violations of these terms and conditions very seriously and reserves the right to edit ads for compliance.

Be sure to fill in all fields.

TESOL's Career Center is configured so that job seekers can search according to job category, job location, required education, and type of job. Job seekers can also set up search agents that notify them when a job that meets their skills and interests is posted. If you do not fill in all the fields in the online submission form, your job may not appear in searches by the applicants who are most interested in your job. If you omit information, you risk losing a valuable pool of highly focused job seekers.

The qualification you select in the Required Education field should be the same as the educational qualifications you state in the Required Experience section.

The Required Education field is a sorting feature. The Required Experience section allows you to elaborate on your selection in the Required Education field and to describe any other experience you require. But if, for example, you choose "PhD" in the Required Education field, then type "PhD preferred, MA required" in the Required Experience field, a job seeker's search for jobs requiring only an MA will not yield your posting.

Be as specific as possible about the requirements for your job.

Clarifying this language will help to ensure that your applicants actually hold the certification you require and do not unknowingly misrepresent their credentials. For example, the term TESOL certification has different meanings in different parts of the globe. In the United States, this term designates a very specific type of certification that must be issued by the state in which the job is located. Outside the United States, this term typically means that the applicant has completed a short-term (usually 4–6 weeks) training course.

If you require teachers to hold some type of certification or licensure, be sure to specify exactly what kind. "ESL endorsement issued by the state of Virginia" or "18 graduate-level credit hours in TESOL or a related field" are much more meaningful to candidates than "TESOL certificate," which may mean very different things to different people.

Specify the unit of currency for the salary and how often this amount will be paid.

An international audience will not necessarily share your assumptions about how you quote the salary, the unit of currency you are using, or even what constitutes a reasonable assumption about the salary for the posted job. Specify whether the salary is the rate per course, per hour, per day, per week, per month, per semester, or per year.

Remember to include the unit of currency. Be aware that many countries have units of currency with the same names; for example, many countries designate their currency in dollars and pounds. Wherever possible, you should use expressions like U.S. dollars, Turkish lira, or British pounds.

Review your job ad carefully before posting. The system will show you exactly what will appear online.

Your contact information, for example, will automatically appear in your ad unless you remove it using the editing feature. Remember to fill in all the fields. Doing so will ensure that your ad will appear in the appropriate searches.

Include any applicable deadlines.

TESOL regularly receives complaints from job seekers who applied for jobs on TESOL's website only to be told that the deadline for applying had passed. If you have submission deadlines, please include this critical information in your ad.

Become familiar with the Career Center's editing and removal features.

TESOL's editing is limited to minor stylistic changes and any changes necessary to bring your ad into compliance with TESOL's Terms and Conditions for Recruiters. You should become familiar with the editing features of the Career Center so you can change your ad or take it down when you wish.

Remove your job posting when the deadline passes. TESOL will not remove your posting for you.

TESOL Career Center ads run for 45 days. If you include a deadline that falls before the 45-day period has ended or you fill the position, please remove your posting at that time. Removing your job will help ensure that your institution does not continue to receive resumes and inquiries after the deadline.
