On CALL E-Newsletter Mission Statement and Submission Guidelines

  • Date:

    27 October 2011

  • Purpose

The goal of the CALL-IS newsletter, “On CALL,” is to provide an overview of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) through articles on research, trends, and materials. It also serves to keep members aware of current activities and projects within the CALL-IS. Columns provide a forum for CALL-IS members to share their experiences and opinions.

    Audience

“On CALL” is written for the CALL-IS membership, which includes anyone interested in computer-assisted language learning, but primarily language teachers, graduate students in TESL/TEFL, and administrators with varying levels of CALL expertise. The membership represents a broad base of international locations and teaching situations, making for a diverse readership.

    Vision

    1. “On CALL” reports on the activities of the CALL-IS, including what takes place at the national convention and other sponsored projects.

    2. In order to keep CALL-IS members in touch with the field, articles focus on research, trends, and materials, including books, software, and web sites.

    3. Articles are professional in style and written in language that is clear and understandable to the majority of the readership.

    4. “On CALL” balances the items in each issue, so as to address the diversity of the CALL-IS membership.

    Submission Guidelines for “On CALL”

You are invited to contribute to “On CALL,” the newsletter for the CALL-IS of TESOL. We love to get articles from our members. Your ideas and knowledge are what make this interest section the great one that it is. In an effort to make the submission process as easy and smooth as possible, the following submission guidelines have been formulated. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    • All types of information related to CALL can be submitted (articles, web sites, resources, books/journal articles, events, book/software reviews, etc.)
    • Submissions should begin with a brief abstract (approximately 50 words).
    • Submissions should conclude with a one- or two-sentence bio about the author(s).
    • Length can vary depending on the type of submission—articles should be no more than 1000 words, but other types of submissions will be shorter.
    • Use the Publications Manual of the American Psychological Association, Fifth Edition (APA) guidelines for referencing all outside sources.

    Readability

    • Keep text short and bulleted, as online readers prefer well-chunked information, and put main ideas first.
    • Use plenty of headings and sub-heads.
    • Use clickable links (with http://).
    • Try to add pictures (they should be sent as separate “.jpg” files and their position in your document should be indicated by an “insert picture X here” statement).

    Process

    • Submit articles in Microsoft Word (as a “.doc” file) in an email attached to the editor (bikowski@ohio.edu).
    • Send pictures as separate “.jpg” files, indicating in the original where you want the file to be placed.

    After you send your submission

After receiving a submission, the newsletter editor will review it, possibly revise it for readability, clarity, or formatting, and then if changes are made, send it back to the author for a final check. All articles then go on to TESOL for final editing and publishing. Articles will be printed as soon as they can, depending on scheduling and when the article is received. Feel free to contact me (bikowski@ohio.edu) with any questions!
