  • Got permissions questions? TESOL's got answers: Permissions FAQs

To republish or duplicate materials copyrighted by TESOL for any nonpersonal purpose (including for academic course packs), you must obtain permission.

The TESOL permissions program is administered by Copyright Clearance Center (CCC). Any time you borrow more than 150 consecutive words from a TESOL publication, you need to contact CCC via their Web site, www.copyright.com. CCC will advise you of the fee when they respond to your request. This rule applies to all material from the following:

    • Books published and copyrighted by TESOL
    • TESOL Quarterly
    • TESOL Journal
    • TESOL Connections
    • Essential Teacher and all of its components
    • Content on the TESOL Web site
      1. TESOL owns the copyright to all materials posted on TESOL's Web site, with the exception of articles with bylines from the TESOL Matters* archives. TESOL grants permission for one download for personal use of any document posted to TESOL's Web site.
      2. TESOL does not own the copyright to articles and notices in affiliate and interest section publications. Please contact the appropriate interest sectionnewsletter editor or chair or affiliate newsletter editor or president for information on how to secure permission.

TESOL will not grant permission for the following types of requests:

    • republishing an article from Essential Teacher, TESOL Journal, or TESOL Quarterly in another serial publication devoted to language teaching and learning or linguistics; this prohibition extends to affiliate and interest section newsletters.
    • duplicating entire books, journals, or videos
    • reposting articles or chapters to the Web

    For Library Reserves

Libraries may place up to three paper copies of any article or chapter from a TESOL publication on reserve without having to write for permission. TESOL offers a license for materials to be placed on electronic reserves.

For Permissions Outside the United States

For permission requests in Canada, you must contact CanCopy (also known as Access Copyright): Tel 416-868-1620; Fax 416-868-1621; http://www.accesscopyright.ca/. For permission to photocopy materials for course packs in other countries, ask CCC to direct you to the proper permission-granting institution.
