Congratulations to Karen Cadeiro-Kaplan who has won the position of Member A to the Affiliate Leadership Council (ALC). The field of candidates was extremely strong and is a great indication of the growing profile of the ALC within the organization.

Karen Cadeiro-Kaplan has been involved with the affiliate council for the past 3 years as the TESOL liaison to California TESOL (CATESOL), in which capacity she participated as a presenter on issues of sociopolitical involvement each of these years. She served as CATESOL president in 2006-07 and was on the executive board of CATESOL as president-elect (2005-06) and past president (2007-08). She sees the ALC as a much-needed space for affiliate leaders to be engaged in professional development across borders.

She is currently a professor at San Diego State University and serves as department chair of the Department of Policy Studies in Language & Cross Cultural Education. Her work and research is focused on teacher development, curriculum, and advocacy in the area of English language development and biliteracy.

The current members of the ALC—Elke Apelbaum Savoy, Ismael Garrido, Don Weasenforth, and Misty Adoniou—extend a warm welcome to Karen on behalf of all our affiliate members.
