This project applies theory from rhetoric and applied linguistics to make an analytical framework for comparing three best-selling composition textbooks and identify gaps to inform the design of future textbooks. Also, it suggests that effective writing pedagogy employs applied linguistic theory, including register variation, input-output mapping, explicit versus implicit knowledge, and learner attention.
