TRANSCRIPT: Wong Podcast, April 2008

Hello. I’m Shelley Wong, TESOL’s  President.  Like many of you, I recently returned from TESOL’s Convention in New York City.  I want to thank all of you for making it a very successful convention. In this podcast, I want to emphasize ways that you can be actively involved in TESOL throughout the year.

First, I encourage you to begin making your plans now for the 2009 TESOL Convention.  It will take place March 25-28, 2009, in Denver, Colorado.  Remember,  the deadline for submitting abstracts for the 2009 convention is June 2!

You don’t have to wait until Denver, however, to participate in  professional development through TESOL.  The 2008 TESOL Academy will take place June 20-21, at Roosevelt University, in Chicago, Illinois.  It  features seven 10-hour, hands-on workshops with a special focus on  key issues facing Prek-12 ESL teachers. Topics include working with mainstream teachers and ESL students with special needs.   Learn more about the 2008 TESOL Academy on TESOL’s Web site, under “Education”.

Perhaps the most important step you can take to engage with the profession is to join the association, or renew your membership in TESOL.  TESOL is your professional home for knowledge-sharing, community, and advocacy for the profession.

You can join as many of TESOL’s interest sections as you like, by logging into TESOL’s Web site (as a member), then clicking on “My Communities”.  There are a variety of ways to get involved with your peers in the interest sections, from volunteering to review proposals for the convention to posting a comment or question on the e-lists. Who knows?  Maybe the question that you pose to your colleagues will stimulate a rich discussion!

On behalf of TESOL’s Board of Directors, we look forward to a great year ahead for TESOL.  Thank you for your active involvement  and commitment to the profession.
