TRANSCRIPT: Wong Podcast, June 2008
Hello. I’m Shelley Wong, TESOL’s President. The focus of my podcast is to inform you about three popular book titles currently available through TESOL Publications. TESOL offers almost 90 books written by experts in the field of TESOL in diverse topics such as standards, technology in the classroom, language learning methodologies, pedagogy, teacher education, assessment and professional development.
• Much has happened in the world of technology in the past 10 years. Technology is a great equalizer; it’s an effective tool that TESOL members from all corners of the world can use to get access to professional information. There is still a need to maintain a connection between research on computer-assisted language learning or (CALL) and second language acquisition (SLA). The second edition of CALL Environments: Research, Practice, and Critical Issues, edited by Joy Egbert and Elizabeth Hanson-Smith discusses new research, presents new classroom tools and proposes new practical applications.
• English is rapidly becoming the global language of business and communication. Each year more native English speakers are teaching abroad. I can speak from my own personal experience. Over 30 years ago newly graduated from a university, without a degree in English or TESOL, I traveled to Hong Kong and began teaching English at a girls middle school. I quickly learned how important it is to understand the culture and have a set of practical teaching tools. For that reason, I highly recommend the book, More Than a Native Speaker. The author Don Snow, offers a nontechnical introduction to English teaching for native-English-speaking teachers working outside their home countries. This publication includes workbook activities, an expanded discussion of student-directed learning, and a full array of culture-based discussion topics.
• A third book is Helping English Language Learners Succeed in Pre-K-Elementary Schools. This book is helpful for ESL and mainstream teachers who want to work together. Edited by Jan Lacina, Linda New Levine and Patience Sowa, this book shares the experiences of exemplary ESL and mainstream classroom teachers who regularly collaborate for the educational achievement of English language learners.
You can easily order any of these books by visiting TESOL’s Web site, www.tesol.org and using the electronic Books catalog. Remember, the TESOL member rate for books is approximately 30% lower than the nonmember rate!
Perhaps, the most important step you can take to get access to all of TESOL’s publications at attractive member rates and other benefits is to join TESOL , or renew your membership in TESOL. TESOL is the best professional home for knowledge-sharing, community, and advocacy for the profession.
Thank you for your involvement and commitment to our profession.
