Articles that appear in TESOL Matters with bylines (in print or on-line) are not copyrighted by TESOL. However, according to U.S. copyright law, the authors themselves do retain copyright of their own work. Although TESOL encourages readers to share the contents of TM with interested colleagues and students, articles should not be republished or posted on-line without permission from the author and a complete reference to the issue of TM in which the article was published. TESOL encourages readers interested in republishing, photocopying, or posting TM articles to contact authors directly to secure written permission. E-mail addresses appear in the affiliations statements that close each article.

TESOL grants permission for one download for personal use of any document posted to TESOL's Web site. However, anytime you borrow more than 100 consecutive words from any Web-based document with the intention of republishing them elsewhere, you need to request permission from Copyright Clearance Center (CCC). Affiliate, Interest Section, or Caucus Newsletters/E-Newsletters

TESOL does not own the copyright to articles and notices in affiliate and interest section publications. Please contact the appropriate interest section newsletter editor or chair or affiliate newsletter editor or president or caucus leader for information on how to secure permission.

Interest sections, caucuses, and affiliates do not have automatic permission to reproduce TESOL materials in IS, caucus, or affiliate publications. Any such requests must be processed through the CCC. Contact CCC via their Web site, http://www.copyright.com/

For Library Reserves

Libraries may place up to three paper copies of any article or chapter from a TESOL publication on reserve without having to write for permission. TESOL offers a license for materials to be placed on electronic reserves.

Automatic Denial of Permission

TESOL will not grant permission for the following types of requests

  • republishing an article from Essential Teacher, Compleat Links, TESOL Journal, or TESOL Quarterly in another serial publication devoted to language teaching and learning or linguistics; this prohibition extends to affiliate and interest section newsletters
  • duplicating entire books, journals, or videos
  • reposting articles or chapters to the Web
