Hello, world!
I am an EFL teacher in Argentina, having worked for 37 years now teaching all levels of English at a 2,000-student, private institution, centre for Cambridge examinations in Rosario, Argentina. I coordinate advanced courses and the Multimedia Centre.
Like all Argentinian teachers so far, I have learnt English as a foreign language the hard way, living in a country where Spanish is the only common written and oral nexus between teachers as models and passive students as learners whose other models come from canned cassettes and CD's.
Thanks to the advent of the Internet, some 8 years ago I got in contact with Webheads in Action, an impressively enriching online Community of Practice made up of teachers from all corners of the world. These teachers do research on the use of technology in the classroom by exploring, analyzing, and using free Web tools, which they integrate into their teaching practice. We have been meeting weekly to share ideas, opinions, and findings and to participate actively in online seminars and joint projects with our students—both synchronously and asynchronously—and also to socialize, have fun together, and learn from each other in the most friendly of atmospheres and professional environments.
Some of us had been very lucky to meet face-to-face, but most of us got together online only, through text, voice, and webcams. TESOL in Seattle was then the perfect excuse for a Webhead meeting, and there we went, 25 members from different countries, some as convention attendees, some as fortunate award recipients and presenters, ready to share a unique gathering at the 2007 Convention in the United States.
And it turned out to be one of the richest experiences not only from the academic and professional standpoint, but also because of the human touch, the warmth, and the joy of confirming that bonds of affection sustaining a community can also be built and made online through and despite geographical distances.
