2011 Course Schedules and Course Descriptions
The two required online courses for the TESOL Core Certificate Program are offered twice per year.
A. Foundation Course (6-week, 60-hour) - Offered twice each year, starting in January and June.
- Fundamentals of TESOL
- January 24 - March 6, 2011
- June 13 - July 24, 2011
Fundamentals of TESOL is the foundation course for the TESOL Core Certificate Program and a prerequisite for the other courses. This course provides general theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for prospective and newly practicing ESL/EFL teachers. It familiarizes the participants with theoretical and practical aspects of language, language learning, teaching methodology, and classroom practice.
Instructors
Lead Instructor
Jan Dormer has a doctorate in education from the University of Toronto, in Toronto, Canada, in curriculum teaching and learning, with a concentration in TESOL teacher development. She has a master’s degree in TESOL from Ball State University, in Muncie, Indiana, and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Asbury College, in Wilmore, Kentucky.
Jan has more than 25 years of ESL/EFL experience, including teaching at several colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, a language institute in Brazil, and an elementary school and masters-level institute in Indonesia.
Her areas of interest in TESOL include teacher education, online learning, and improving communication and collaboration between native and nonnative English-speaking teachers. She is also a member of TESOL’s Professional Development Committee.
She currently lives and teaches in Kenya, while also teaching online for Anderson University in Indiana, USA.
Assistant Instructor
Sheila Corwin holds a TESL certificate from the linguistics department at Sonoma State University and a MA degree in TESOL from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, with an emphasis in language program administration in Monterey, California. After deciding to settle in Florence, Italy, permanently, in 2007, Sheila served as academic director and principal trainer for a teacher training and cultural center for two years. She currently continues her work in TESOL as an online teacher trainer for students enrolled in an online TEFL certificate course based in London, England. She is also working as a curriculum consultant and trainer for a teacher training organization based in Mexico. Sheila has taught English language courses in Italy; at the university level in Oaxaca, Mexico; and in a private language school in her home state, California, USA.

- Teaching Language Skills and Assessment: Adult Learners

This course, which is guided and supported by TESOL’s Standards for ESL/EFL Teachers of Adults (2009), discusses appropriate methods and techniques for teaching language skills, vocabulary, and grammar to adult learners. The participants learn how to address the language learners’ needs and different learning styles. The course also stresses assessment approaches and tools to help English language teachers accurately evaluate students’ learning and proficiency. The adult students discussed in this course include language learners who may not be literate in their native language. Because these learners come from a variety of backgrounds, this course also discusses literacy issues and cultural aspects of language acquisition. This course focuses on both ESL and EFL contexts.
Instructors
Radmila Popovic is an assistant professor at the University of Belgrade and a visiting scholar at the SIT Graduate Institute in Vermont. She has studied both in her native country and the United States. She holds a doctorate in applied linguistics from the University of Belgrade and a master’s degree in TESOL from School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. Radmila is primarily interested in effective ways of drawing on the knowledge of “foreign” and “local” experts to effect educational change. She has co-designed and taught new preservice teacher training courses and mentored new teachers in the program in Serbia. She has also worked as a consultant for the British Council and Cambridge ESOL.
Radmila has presented at a number of national and international conferences and she was a plenary speaker at the 2008 IATEFL conference.
Jayme Adelson-Goldstein is an adult English as a second language (ESL) professional development specialist, curriculum consultant, and author. Over the past 30 years, Jayme has focused on helping adult and secondary ESL teachers reflect on and refine their techniques for integrated skill instruction, cooperative learning, vocabulary development, focused listening, and multilevel instruction. In addition to her extensive training work, Jayme has also worked as a consultant for numerous agencies including the California Literacy Professional Development Project (CALPRO) and the Outreach and Technical Assistance Network. Her most recent projects include developing a virtual teacher workroom for multilevel instructors and writing curriculum for a community college transitional ESL writing course. Her publications include Listen First, The Oxford Picture Dictionary, and Step Forward: English for Everyday Life. She has been the plenary speaker at Ontario TESL and various state and regional TESOL conferences.
- Teaching Language Skills and Assessment: Young Learners

This course is primarily focused on EFL contexts. It provides participants with a solid foundation using appropriate methods and techniques for teaching language skills, vocabulary, and grammar to school-age learners. Participants also learn about the importance of language acquisition for young learners’ physical, social, and cognitive development and discusses the factors that contribute to these learners’ success. Given the diversity of learning contexts worldwide, this course also discusses cultural aspects of language acquisition. Participants learn how to address diverse students’ needs and learning styles. The course also explores assessment approaches and tools to help English language teachers accurately evaluate students’ learning and proficiency, and use the information for targeted instruction.
Lead Instructor
Joanna Rodiki Petrides has more than 18 years of experience in the English language teaching field. A trained primary school teacher and EFL teacher and teacher trainer, she currently works as the Deputy Head in Primary Education and as a Scientific Associate at the European University of Cyprus (Foreign Language Teaching in Primary Education classes). She has a teaching diploma from the Pedagogical Academy of Cyprus, a bachelor of education and her PhD in the Teaching of Modern Languages from the University of Surrey Roehampton, in the United Kingdom, and a master of arts in applied linguistics for language teaching from the University of Southampton, in the United Kingdom. Her areas of interest include teacher training, online teaching, foreign language teaching, material design, curriculum development, and implementation of information and communication technologies in education.
