Who's Eligible: TESOL members who are graduate students in TESL/TEFL programs worldwide.
Purpose: To assist graduate students traveling to a TESOL convention.
Amount: US$500 in addition to a waiver of the convention registration fees.
Criteria: Applications are evaluated according to the applicant's (a) scholarship, (b) personal attributes, (c) involvement in and commitment to ESL/EFL teaching and the profession, and (d) financial need.
To Apply: Send 1 copy of each of the following: (a) a letter of application stating (1) your name (as it appears on TESOL membership*), address, telephone, e-mail address, and TESOL membership number if available, (2) your institution, and (3) your program of study including courses completed, in progress, and to be taken; (b) a biographical statement itemizing (1) your ESL/EFL teaching experience, (2) your involvement in regional, national, or international ESL/EFL organizations, (3) your career plans upon completion of studies, and (4) your current financial situation; and (c) a 50-word biography.
Supporting Documentation: With your application, enclose a sealed letter of recommendation for the Marckwardt award from a faculty member familiar with your program specifying (a) your personal attributes, (b) your scholarship, and (c) your course of study.
Additional Comments: The Albert H. Marckwardt Memorial Fund was established in 1976 to honor this distinguished educator from the University of Michigan and Princeton University who helped shape the community of language scholars and teachers. It is maintained through TESOL member contributions.
