Since June 2000, the TESOL Board has been studying how to further develop opportunities for improved leadership at many levels in TESOL. Several Boards have considered how reconfiguring the TESOL Board would help facilitate this change. In November 2002, the Task Force of Reconfiguring the TESOL Board (TFRBD) started work to ensure the best possible representation for various entities and groups within TESOL. The TFRBD designed a Board election process that no longer identified candidates as only representing a specific entity.
The TFRBD incorporated member input at an unprecedented level. The task force focused on gathering information from the TESOL membership through an online survey; a number of meetings at TESOL's 2003 convention in Baltimore, Maryland; and many e-mails. In addition, the TFRBD investigated documents and empirically based studies conducted by previous Boards that had contacted other organizations like TESOL. After this information gathering, the task force submitted a draft proposal to the Board at its June 2003 meeting. The TFRBD used the information from this meeting, another member survey, and many more e-mails to revise the draft, which was again submitted to the Board at its October 2003 meeting.
In October 2003, the TESOL Board approved reconfiguration of the Board of Directors. The following is a description of the major anticipated results and key changes.
