Length of Program: 1.5-2 years. Students may be full-time or part-time and must start the program in the fall semester.

Program Requirements: 27 credits plus 12 prerequisite credits. 15 hours of observation and 10 hours practice teaching is required. Neither a thesis nor a comprehensive examination is required.

Courses Offered: (*prerequisite) (**required) *Introduction to Linguistic Analysis; *Pedagogical Grammar of English; *Introduction to TESL; *Methodology in the Teaching of English to Adults; **TESL Research/Capping Project; **Practicum in TESL; **Introduction to Data Analysis in Educational Research; **Introduction to Methods of Educational Research; **5 courses from among: Psychological Aspects of Bilingualism and Bilingual Education; Teaching and Learning Grammar in Second Language Education; Teaching English as an International Language; Classroom Research Issues in Second Language Learning; Teaching Literacy and Reading to ESL Learners; ESL Assessment and Evaluation; Teaching Pronunciation to ESL Learners; Settlement/Adjustment Issues for ESL Immigrants to Canada; Program Development in TESOL; Computer-Assisted Language Learning; Teaching English for Academic Purposes; Selected Topics in TESL.

Admission Requirements: Applicants must have a 4-year undergraduate degree from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of B (3.0) over the latest 60 course-weights; ESL classroom teaching experience. Nonnative speakers of English must have one of: a TOEFL score of 600 (CBT 250) plus TSE 55 or iBT 98 (28 in speaking, 24 in listening/writing, 22 in reading); an IELTS score of 8 (listening/speaking) with no band less than 7; a CAEL score of 80 (listening/speaking) with no band less than 70.

Tuition, Fees, and Aid: For domestic students, CAD$532.08 per 3-credit course; for others, CAD$1,130.64 per 3-credit course. Fees vary with registration status.

General: Some courses are offered on a rotating basis. The faculty in the program maintain close ties to the ESL teaching community and have strong research backgrounds.
     The program leads to certification in TESOL from both TESL Canada and Alberta Teachers of English as a Second Language (ATESL).
     None of this program is available via distance learning.
     The university has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers.
