Length of Program: 4 semesters. Students may be full-time and may begin the program at the beginning of the fall, spring or summer semester.
Program Requirements: 33 semester credit hours. An internship of 300 hours with 4 observations is required. Competence in a language other than English is not required. A thesis is not required. A comprehensive examination is required.

Admission Requirements: Prerequisite for pursuing Alabama K-12 Certification in ESL: 1) MA in Education/ESL (33-36 semester hours): Prerequisite is an Alabama teaching certificate at the bachelor's level; 2) Certification-Only in ESL (21 semester hours): Prerequisite is an Alabama teaching certificate at the master's level; 3) Alternative MA in Education/ESL (42-50 semester hours): The main prerequisite is an undergraduate degree in a language or 32 credit hours in a language of which 19 are upper division. Non-certification MA in Education/ESL (33 semester hours): Prerequisite is an undergraduate degree in any field. Nonnative speakers of English must have: a TOEFL score of 600 (CBT 250; iBT 150 web) plus a TWE of 4; UAB Graduate School Language Assessments Level 3 Oral and Level 4 Writing.
Tuition, Fees, and Aid: For in-state students, US$698 per 3 credit hour course (06-07); for out-of-state students US$1,463 per 3 credit hour course (06-07). Fees are parking, admission fee, US$35 (international students, US$60).
General: Part of this program is available via distance learning. Three courses have a blended format designed for distance delivery via site-based learning groups. Each group meets at a place and time determined by its members. Students submit individual and group assignments via a software program called Blackboard. Four courses are designed around a one-week intensive summer module on the UAB campus. One course is delivered via a 6-Saturday format. Graduate students come from all over the State of Alabama, some at a distance of 300 or more miles.
This program leads to a state credential in TESOL.
