Degree Offered: MAT: ESOL.

Length of Program
: 4 semesters. Students may be full-time or part-time and may begin the program at the beginning of the fall, spring or summer semester.

Program Requirements
: 39 semester hours. Competence in a language other than English is strongly recommended for native-English-speaking students. An electronic professional portfolio is required. All students must complete the Praxis II Exam prior to graduation. 6 credit hours of student teaching are required. A comprehensive examination is required. A thesis is not required.

Admission Requirements
: The university requires a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with an average cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. In addition to the minimum university requirements for graduate study, satisfactory GRE and Praxis I scores are required. Passing scores for Praxis I (as set by the District of Columbia teaching licensing agency) are Reading 172, Writing 171 and Math 174. Nonnative speakers of English must have a TOEFL score of 600 (CBT 250; iBT 100).

Tuition, Fees, and Aid
: All students, US$1,178 per credit hour. International students are required to submit financial documents demonstrating availability of funds for at least one year.
Federal government loans and merit-based awards such as graduate assistantships are available.

General
: The program is designed for students with no previous background or preparation in education who wish to acquire ESOL teaching certification for Grades K-12. The degree prepares graduates to work effectively with diverse populations. 
The program is offered in conjunction with the School of Education and leads to a state credential in TESOL.

Part of this program is available via distance learning. ELT I course is offered online during the Summer TESOL Institute.
