A practicum course is available as an elective (50 hours of practice teaching). Neither a thesis nor a comprehensive examination is required. A final reflective paper is required in place of the comprehensive exam.

 

Courses Offered: (*required) *Linguistics for Non-Majors; *Methods of Teaching ESL; *Modern English Grammar; *Grammatical Analysis; *Second Language Acquisition Theory; *Second Language Acquisition Research; *one course in Reading or Writing (e.g., Academic Writing in ESL, Contrastive Rhetoric, Linguistic and the Study of Literature); *one course in Culture (e.g., Cultural Dimension in Second Language Acquisition); *two electives (e.g., Curriculum Development, Discourse Analysis, Sociolinguistics, Computational Linguistics, Code Switching, Testing and Evaluation).

Admission Requirements: The university requires a BA or BS from a recognized university with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (a 3.5 GPA is preferred), GRE scores from the general exam, a 2-3 page statement of purpose, a resume or via, three letters of recommendation (preferably from academic sources), a 6-10 page writing sample on an academic topic, and a minimum of one year of teaching experience. Nonnative speakers of English must have a TOEFL score of 550 [CBT 213; iBT80] and a TSE of 55. A TOEFL score of 600 (CBT 250; iBT100) is preferred. The TSE is required only for those applying for a teaching assistantship.

 

Tuition, Fees, and Aid: For in-state students, US$2772 per semester for full-time enrollment; for out-of-state students, US$6,129 per semester for full-time enrollment. Fees are miscellaneous US$111.92 per semester; international students: orientation fee, US$75; SEVIS fee, US$40 per year. Tuition scholarships registration scholarships, teaching assistantship (through the English department as well as through a number of language departments), fellowships, minority fellowships and Peace Corps Fellowships are available.

 

General: The University of Arizona is located in Tucson, a multicultural/multilingual city that provides a rich environment for research in second language acquisition and sociolinguistics. The English Language/Linguistics Program emphasizes advanced training and leadership development for TESOL professionals, with elective course work available from a variety of departments. In addition, our Center for English as a Second Language serves as a laboratory for the study of teaching, program administration, and language acquisition

None of this program is available via distance learning. 

The university has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers.
