General: APU's TESOL programs combine an orientation toward compassionate Christian service with strong academic preparation and practical preparation for language teaching. The programs represent a blend of course work and practical experiences which equip graduates to respond to the wide range of language needs, socio-cultural differences, and program requirements they will encounter. Qualified faculty share their professional and cross-cultural experiences while adapting course work to the unique needs and interest of students. Personal advisement and practice teaching supervision nurture close faculty-student relationships. APU is located in the greater Los Angeles area, where more than 150 languages are spoken. This diverse linguistic and cultural environment offers students an unmatched variety of multicultural practice-teaching and research opportunities.
For the two practicum courses (6 units), students may enroll in the Study Abroad Program and travel with a professor and a team of 6-12 teachers to a refugee camp on the Thai/Burma border to teach for two-three weeks in August. Although the experience is rewarding, the teaching conditions are challenging and strenuous. Teachers must hike through mud in the pouring rain to reach the camp, teach in rooms with no walls and thatch roofs, eat basic food provided by the camp for lunch, and design their own curriculum which is reassessed and adjusted each day. The trip is highly recommended but requires students who are willing to take on challenges and who can work as a team. Students may elect to complete practicum courses overseas.
None of this program is available via distance learning.
The university has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers.
