Degree Offered: MA in TESOL and linguistics.

Length of Program: 5-6 semesters. Students may be full-time or part-time and may begin the program at the beginning of any semester.

Program Requirements: 45 credits. Two years of college-level language or demonstrated competence in a language other than English is required for native speakers of English; English meets the requirement for nonnative speakers of English. A thesis is required. Neither practice teaching nor a comprehensive examination is required.

Admission Requirements: The university requires a bachelor's degree from a college or university that is accredited by its regional accrediting association with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in the latter half of the baccalaureate, a 300-word autobiography and a statement of purpose, a sample of scholarly or critical writing (preferably a paper written for a class), official transcripts, three letters of recommendation, records of standardized test scores, and a GRE score. Nonnative speakers of English must provide a TOEFL score.

Tuition, Fees, and Aid: For in-state students, US$6,672 for 12-18 hours; for out-of-state students, US$17,740 for 12-18 hours.  University fellowships and departmental graduate assistantships (either research or teaching) are awarded competitively.

General: Foci of the TESOL program include practical aspects of language instruction with an emphasis on teacher introspection; discourse analysis in second language acquisition; pragmatic aspects of grammar analysis, acquisition, and instruction; socio-cultural issues in language use, language acquisition, and language instruction; and consideration of phonetic, phonological, and historical areas of linguistics. State-of-the-art computer facilities are utilized for teaching and research.
International fieldwork is possible in programs in northeast Asia.
     The university has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers.
