Degree Offered: MA in linguistics (applied track).

Length of Program: 2 years. Students are generally full time and begin their study at the beginning of the fall quarter.

Program Requirements: 38 units with thesis; 42 units without thesis. Competence in a language other than English is required for native speakers of English; English meets the requirement for nonnative speakers of English. Practice teaching is required. Either a thesis or a comprehensive examination is required.

Admission Requirements: The university requires a GPA of 3.0, three letters of recommendation, GRE scores, and a TOEFL score of 610 for international students.

Tuition, Fees, and Aid: For in-state students, US$4,831 per academic year; for out-of-state students, US$15,735 per academic year. Teaching assistantships, research assistantships, grants, and work-study are available.

General: The program gives students a firm foundation in linguistics and an intensive teaching practicum. Students begin teaching classes for international graduate students during their first quarter and continue teaching throughout their first year, getting feedback from faculty and learning to design courses and materials. Their practicum work is closely coordinated with the Methods, Materials, and Research in TESOL courses (The Teaching of EFL, Materials of TESOL, and Recent Research and Special Projects in TESOL). They also have opportunities to observe ESL classes on campus and in the community.
     The university has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers through University Extension.
