Degree Offered: MS in TESOL

Length of Program: 4 semesters. Students may be full-time or part-time and may begin the program at the beginning of the fall or spring semester.

Program Requirements: 33 units, at 15 class-hours per unit. Twenty hours of service learning. 45 hours of observation and about 10 hours of practice teaching are required. A thesis is not required. A comprehensive examination is required.

Courses Offered: (*required) *Fundamentals in TESOL; *Advanced Principles of TESOL (speaking/listening); *Advanced Principles of TESOL (reading/writing); *Second Language Acquisition; *Second Language Assessment; *Curriculum and Program Design for TESOL; *Practicum (45 hours in the classroom, 9 of them of actual teaching); one of the following three courses is required and the other two are electives: Pedagogical Grammar and TESOL, Teaching Pronunciation and Oral Discourse in TESOL, Teaching Vocabulary in ESL/EFL; Technology in Second Language Learning; Teaching English Abroad; Research Methods for TESOL; Teaching Culture in the Language Classroom; electives from Secondary Education, Anthropology, Psychology, English, Sociology, Child and Adolescent Studies, and other related areas.

Admission Requirements: The university requires completion of an upper-division composition, an upper-division course in contemporary US culture/literature, an upper-division grammar of English course, an upper-division Introduction to English Linguistics course with a grade of B minus or better. Nonnative speakers of English must have a TOEFL score of 573 (CBT 230, iBT 89) and a TSE score of 50 (iBT speaking 26).Two years of one foreign language or one year each of two foreign languages with a minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for native English speakers.

Tuition, Fees, and Aid: For in-state students, US$1,745 for full-time registration (7 or more units); for out-of-state students, add US$369 per unit to in-state tuition. One US$1,000 scholarship per year and at least one nonresident tuition waiver per year are available.

General: The program is working on allowing students to do practice teaching abroad. None of this program is available via distance learning. The university has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers.
