Degree Offered: MA in TESOL.
Length of Program: 5 quarters (including the comprehensive exam). Students may be full-time or part-time and may begin their study at the beginning of the fall, winter or spring semester.
Program Requirements: 45 quarter units. Competence in a language other than English is required. 30 hours of field experience is required. Neither a comprehensive examination nor a thesis is required.
Students with substantial EFL/ESL teaching experience may waive the practicum requirement.

Admission Requirements: Applicants for admission to the M.A. in TESOL program must have a 2.75 grade point average in the last 90 quarter units attempted. Prerequisite: Linguistics in Language Education or English Language in America with a grade of B or better. (This prerequisite can be waived with advisor's approval.) Nonnative speakers of English must have a TOEFL score of 600 (CBT 250), with at least 60 on each section or a TOEFL score of 550 with a TWE of 5.
Tuition, Fees, and Aid: For in-state students, US$787.75 for 0-6 quarter units, US$ 1,221.75 got 6.1 quarter units or more; for out-of-state students, US$226 per unit in addition to the in-state student fee. Fees are, late fee (non-refundable) US$25; Golden Eagle Card US$5; Proficiency Examination, US$15; Student Vehicle Parking Permit, US$75.
Graduate Equity Fellowship Program: This program is designed to increase the number of master’s degrees awarded to economically disadvantaged CSU students, especially those students from groups that are underrepresented among graduate degree recipients in their area and those who are disabled. Grant stipends may be up to US$1,500 per quarter. Scholarships: Cal State L.A. has over 250 different scholarships that are awarded to more than 650 students per year. A small number of these scholarships are open to graduate students. The average scholarship award is US$600. International Graduate Student Tuition Waiver Program: The International Graduate Student Tuition Waiver provides tuition waivers for selected international graduate students, for up to 24 units per academic year. The actual support enables an international student to waive the nonresident portion of their fees for a maximum of 12 units for the fall, winter and/or spring quarters. Employment on Campus: There are two student employment programs at Cal State L.A. Both the Federal Work-Study Program and the Student Assistant Program are available to enrolled students who are interested in working
General: The MA in TESOL Program prepares teachers for a wide variety of positions both in the U.S. and abroad. Students may select coursework that prepares them for several career choices, including the following: English as a Second Language (ESL) or English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction in the U.S. or in a non English-speaking setting abroad; K-12, adult education, or post secondary settings; and research in Applied Linguistics. The program emphasizes language acquisition processes, teaching methodology, linguistics, language testing, research, and socio-cultural influences. Since its inception in 1989, more than 800 students have graduated from the MA in TESOL Program and have found employment in various instructional settings. They are employed as ESL instructors in California and other regions in the United States as well as EFL teachers throughout the world. Many of our graduates have gone on to pursue doctoral degrees in the United States and abroad.
None of this program is available via distance learning.
The university has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers.
