Degree Offered: MA in TESOL.

Length of Program: 4 semesters. Students may be full-time or part-time and may begin the program at the beginning of the fall or winter semester.

Program Requirements: 30 credits. Competence in a language other than English is required for native speakers of English. The foreign language competency requirement for native English speakers is stated as two semesters of undergraduate foreign language study. Practice teaching:  2 credit hours of observation; 1 credit hour of teaching (practicum is distributed into 3 one-credit units). While the program does not require a thesis, it does require a Plan B paper, an improved and polished version of a research paper. A comprehensive examination is required.

Courses Offered: (*required) *TESOL Methodology; *TESOL Materials, Assessment and Curriculum; *Introduction to Second Language Acquisition; *English Phonology for Language Teachers; *English Grammar for Language Teachers; *Applied Linguistics in Written Communication; *Seminar in English Linguistics; *Practicum in TESOL. Electives include Applied Sociolinguistics; Linguistics and Reading; Problems in Teaching English and Statistics in Education (among others).

Admission Requirements: The University requires an undergraduate major or minor in English, linguistics, language arts, reading, or foreign language required, although applicants with majors in other areas will be considered on an individual basis. It also requires a GPA of 3.0 in a major field and cumulative 2.7 in all coursework. Nonnative English speaking students must have a TOEFL score of 550 (CBT 213; iBT 79-80) or a MELAB score of 85.

Tuition, Fees, and Aid: For in-state students, US $205.65 per credit hour; for out-of-state students, US $408.55 per credit hour. Fees are technology and programs, US$212 per semester; international students, US$60 for additional application and orientation fees (combined). The department has at least one teaching assistantship per semester specifically for the TESOL program; qualified students may also apply for other English department assistantships involving teaching freshman composition to native English-speakers. The university awards graduate research fellowships, and there are a range of individual scholarships available.

General: The practicum allows interactive activities like tutoring before full-scale teaching, and is coordinated with Central's English language institute. The range of courses includes strong emphasis on connections among functional accounts of language, discourse and genre analysis, and pedagogy.
     None of this program is available via distance learning.
     The university has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers.
