Degree Offered: MA in English (TESOL).

Length of Program: 4 quarters. Students may be full-time or part-time and must begin the program at the beginning of the fall semester.

Program Requirements: 45 quarter credits. Competence in a language other than English is required. The program consists of 45 total quarter credits: 34 quarter credits of course work plus 5 quarter credits of practicum/observation plus 6 quarter credits for thesis/non-thesis option. The thesis option requires candidates to write a thesis and pass a one-hour oral examination over the thesis. If the non-thesis option is selected, the candidate will be required to take 6 credits of individual study and submit a superior or pedagogical paper.

Admission Requirements: All applicants must complete the application for graduate admission and provide a statement of educational and professional objectives, official transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. Pre- or co-requisites to completion of the program include an introductory linguistics course and intermediate-high proficiency in a foreign language. The language proficiency requirement may be met in one of three ways: a) 30 quarter credits of college courses in a foreign language with a minimum 3.0 GPA in those courses, b) intermediate-high score on the Diagnostic ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview, or c) intermediate-high score on the Diagnostic ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test. If the applicant’s native language is English, scores for the GRE general test are required. All applicants for assistantships must submit a writing sample of 5-10 pages directly to the Department of English. The writing sample must include the student’s name, birth date, and Student ID number for identification. International applicants are required to submit a Confidential Financial Statement form as evidence that sufficient funding is available in U.S. currency through personal resources or through a sponsor to pay for one academic year. Nonnative speakers of English must have a TOEFL score of 580 (CBT 237; iBT 92) or a baccalaureate degree from an accredited U.S. university.

Tuition, Fees, and Aid: For in-state students, US$2,104 per quarter; for out-of-state students, US$4,704 per quarter. Fees are US$35 non-refundable application fee. Graduate assistantships are available which offer a stipend, tuition waiver, and health insurance.

General: The M.A. in English (TESOL) is designed to foster the awareness, understanding, and skills necessary for effective teaching of English to speakers of other languages. The program can be completed in three or four quarters with an intensive course of study. It prepares educators to work with adult language learners in the United States and abroad through study in language, pedagogy, and culture. Graduates are qualified to work in American colleges and universities, private ESOL institutes, and programs and schools abroad that provide instruction in English. Students who are already certified to teach in Washington public schools may also receive endorsement in TESOL with some additional work.
     Opportunities for international educational exchange programs are available through the University Office of International Studies and Programs. 
     None of this program is available via distance learning.
     The institution has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers of English.
