General: The English Department at East Carolina University offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in linguistics and TESL. Delivered by a team of specialists in applied linguistics/TESL, discourse analysis and sociolinguistics, our Linguistics and TESL curriculum provides comprehensive training that meets the demand for competent professionals in the field. At the master’s level, the concentration prepares TESL professionals for career opportunities in both public and private sectors of education and business. Possible careers include teaching and training (junior and four-year colleges and English as a Foreign Language [EFL] overseas), teaching English for Specific Purposes (language training for foreign-born employees, such as business English), as well as teaching and training in NC public schools by those who already hold teacher licensure in other areas of expertise. Additionally, the concentration offers a course of study toward the Add-On Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language. Our department encourages interdisciplinary connections, providing a bridge between the humanities and the social sciences, education, anthropology, as well as the speech and hearing sciences. This program leads to a state credential in TESOL for students who already hold the North Carolina teaching license.  Our courses are taught online or meet one night a week. Detailed course descriptions are posted on a semester basis. See the English Department’s graduate course offerings at http://www.ecu.edu/english/courses. Currently, 8 out of 9 required courses can be taken via the Internet.
The English Department has an educational exchange program with the University of Belize; more international practice teaching opportunities for Linguistics/TESL students are in the works.
