General: Students getting the ESL Endorsement enjoy opportunities to interact with and tutor the EKU English Language Instruction Program students (EELI, an Intensive English Program) and will keep a log of their meetings with perhaps as many as three differing nationalities during each semester. Perhaps they will choose to work with the EELI Tutoring Lab being paid $8 an hour but may not use those hours for the log. Often, students interact with international families visiting from Sister Universities in Japan, Korea, and China. The annual international banquet in November and cultural mixers offer additional occasions for interaction with multiple nationalities/languages. Students who study Japanese may opt for an exchange year studying in Japan at the University of Yamanashi; Japanese students from UY come to EELI for a month each August (the 16th group is scheduled for an '07 visit). Exchange students from Korea (from Daegu Haany University) come for a month to study American culture and English each June and also come for an exchange year; the sixth group will arrive June 27, 2007. These students offer endorsement students additional opportunities for field work. Faculty and Administrators from both UY and DHU come with their families to study at EELI and appreciate the help they and their children get from ESL endorsement students. This program leads to a state credential in TESOL.
None of this program is available via distance learning.
The university has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers.
