Degree Offered: MA in TESOL.

Length of Program: 4 semesters. Students may be full-time or part-time and may begin the program at the beginning of the fall semester.

Program Requirements: 32 credit hours. Competence in a language other than English is required for native speakers of English. 15 hours of observation and 20 hours of practice teaching are required. EMU offers three types of student teaching experiences for the fulfillment of this requirement: Academic ESL Courses in the Foreign Language Department; Adult/Community Education ESL Courses; Public School ESL Program (for those who are pursuing the K-12 ESL endorsement). Neither a thesis nor a comprehensive examination is required.

Courses Offered: (*required) 20 credit hours of core TESOL courses: Observation and Analysis of ESL Programs; Theoretical Foundations of Second Language Pedagogy; Pedagogical Grammar and Phonology of ESL; Foreign Language Testing and Evaluation; TESOL Methods: Reading, Writing and Grammar; TESOL Materials: Reading, Writing and Grammar; TESOL Methods: Listening, Speaking and Pronunciation; TESOL Materials: Listening, Speaking and Pronunciation; TESOL Practicum; TESOL Seminar;  six credit hours of cognates and six hours of elective courses are required.

Admission Requirements: To be admitted to the MA TESOL program, an applicant must first meet the Graduate School's admissions standards. No particular undergraduate major is required for admission to this program. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required for the program. Nonnative speakers of English must have a TOEFL score of 560 (CBT 220; iBT 83) plus a TWE of 6/24 or an IELTS score of 6.5 for every section.

Tuition, Fees, and Aid: For in-state students, US$340.50 per credit hour; for out-of-state students, US$671 per credit hour. Graduate assistantships and fellowships are available.

General: The TESOL faculty have years of experience in educating English-language students, and English-language teachers in both the USA and abroad (in the Caribbean, South America, western Europe, the Middle East, south eastern and central Asia). Students may pursue this degree on a full-time or part-time basis. Core TESOL courses are offered in the early evening to accommodate students who have daytime jobs. Most cognate and elective courses are also offered in the evening. Approximately 25 percent of each new group of TESOL students come from countries other than the US, ensuring ample opportunity for developing cross-cultural understanding. This program leads to a state credential in TESOL
     Overseas practicum can be arranged if there is sufficient interest.
     None of this program is available via distance learning. 
     The university has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers.
