Degree Offered: MA for certified teachers/ ESL or multilingual education specialist.

Length of Program: 2-3 years. Students may be full-time or part-time and may begin their study at the beginning of the fall, spring or summer semester.

Program Requirements: 36 credits. Competence in a language other than English is required. Practice teaching is not required. A thesis is required. A comprehensive examination is not required.

Courses Offered: (*required) Second Language Acquisition: Methods and Curriculum; Applied Linguistics for Language Teachers; Comparative Phonology for Language Teachers;50 Behavioral Science for Teachers: Language and Culture; In the Classroom; Literacy Development for Second Language Learners; Behavioral Science for Teachers: The Multicultural Classroom; ESL Specialist with Supervisor's Certificate: Required Courses: Computers as a Teacher’s Aid: Curriculum and Instruction; Curriculum and Instruction: Theory and Practice; Supervision of Instruction and Personnel Evaluation; Curriculum/Program Evaluation and Student Assessment; Change: Curriculum Development and Program Improvement; Master’s Seminar: Research in Specialization; Multilingual Education Specialist Certificate: Required Courses: Assessment in the Second Language Classroom; Integrating Technology in the Second Language Classroom; Language Teaching through Content Areas; English Language Education: Grammar/Teachers of English/ESL ; Internet for Educators; Master’s Seminar: Research in Specialization.

Admission Requirements: The university requires two letters of recommendation. Native and non-native speakers of English must have Advanced High on the LTI Oral Proficiency Interview and Writing Proficiency Test.

Tuition, Fees, and Aid: All students, US$816 per graduate credit (2006-2007). Fees are technology fee and others. Teaching assistantships and scholarships are available.

General: In the ESL specialist track, certified teachers complete licensure requirements for the supervisor's certificate within the course of study. In the multilingual education track, teachers deepen their knowledge of linguistics and take several technology courses.
     This program leads to a state credential in TESOL.
     Part of this program is available via distance learning. Some of the supervisor's license courses are web-based.
     The university has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers.
