Degree Offered: MA in TESL.

Length of Program: Three semesters and the intervening summer. Students may be full-time or part-time and may begin their study at the beginning of the fall or spring semester.

Program Requirements: 37 graduate semester hours. Students have a choice of three capstone options: a comprehensive examination, a portfolio, or (in special cases) a professional project. Competence in a language other than English is required. 24-60 hours of observation are required, depending upon student experience. 30 hours of assistant teaching and 12 hours of solo teaching are required.

Courses Offered: (*required) *Introduction to Linguistics; *Introduction to the Field of ESL; *English Phonology and the Teaching of Pronunciation; *English Syntax and the Teaching of Grammar; *two of: Methods of Teaching Oral/Aural English, Methods of Teaching English Reading and Writing, Methods of Teaching Writing in English, Teaching ESL/EFL to Children; *Evaluation in ESL/EFL; *Practicum I in TESL; *Practicum II in TESL; *Capstone Requirement, Semantics: History of the English Language; Language and Society; Second Language Acquisition; Translation in Second Language Acquisition; Seminar in Second/Foreign Language Teaching; Research and Issues in Computer-Assisted Language Learning; ESL/EFL Materials Development.

Admission Requirements: Completion of a bachelor's degree, two letters of recommendation, and two personal essays are required. Non-native speakers of English must be graduates of an American college or university or have a minimum TOEFL score of 550 with TWE 5 (CBT 213 with TWE 5 or iBT 80 with writing score 25). Students may also enter another TESL program at HPU until they attain the required TOEFL/TWE scores

Tuition, Fees, and Aid: All students, US$560 per credit. Fees are matriculation (first semester), US$50. The university offers a wide range of scholarships. Federal, state, and private financial aid is available.

General: HPU is the largest independent college or university in Hawai'i. It has a diverse student body with approximately equal numbers of students from Hawai'i, from the Mainland US and from around over 100 countries around the world. The TESL curriculum provides a firm foundation in applied linguistics, pedagogy, and language teaching practice. MATESL students have access to the university's ESL programs as well as to a wide range of public and private schools in Honolulu for their observation and practice teaching experiences. The university has agreements with universities in Japan and Korea, and program graduates find jobs around the world.
     None of this program is available via distance learning.. 
     The university has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers.
