Degree Offered: MA in Education with a concentration in TESOL.

Length of Program: 3-5 semesters. Students may be full-time or part-time and may begin the program at the beginning of any semester.

Program Requirements: 30 semester hours. Competence in a language other than English is not required. Practice teaching is not required. Neither a thesis nor a comprehensive examination is required. Students have a final curriculum or research project and portfolio required as a culminating program requirement. 

Courses Offered: (*required) *Theory and Method of Second Language Teaching; *Principles of Linguistics; *Development of Cross-cultural Competencies; *Methods of Research; *TESOL Final Project; Techniques of Teaching Reading and Writing to Second Language Learners; Techniques of Teaching Listening and Speaking to Second Language Learners; Technology and Teaching English Language Learners; Introduction to Psycholinguistics and Sociolinguistics; Teaching English as a Foreign Language; English Grammar for ESL; EFL Teaching; Academic Introduction Designed for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Classrooms; TESOL Special Topics Seminar.

Admission Requirements: The university requires a BA from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum 2.5 GPA, two letters of recommendation and a goal statement. Nonnative speakers of English must have a TOEFL score of 575 (iBT 80) and a TWE score of 5.

Tuition, Fees, and Aid: All students, US$500 per semester unit.  Financial aid including is available for all eligible students

General: The program is designed for experienced and new teachers of ESL and EFL providing a focus on hands-on classroom applications of current theories, strategies, and technology. The program features small seminar classes with highly qualified faculty.  Collaborations with other institutions in the US and abroad provide students a rich learning community and multiple options for field experiences. Students may seek to do practica at the AIU campus in Mexico.  The program is offered in San Diego, Irvine, and Fresno and as an online/summer residency program in San Diego. Distance learning is provided through classes with core faculty via internet based discussion board and interactive online curriculum, virtual classrooms, audio and video enhanced instruction, and e-mail.
     The university has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers located in its International Language Education and Cultural Center.
