Degree Offered: MA in Applied Linguistics/TESL.

Length of Program: 12 months for direct entry students (15 months for bridged entry students). Students must normally be full-time and begin the program in the fall semester.

Program Requirements: 4 credits (8 semester courses) plus a major essay, or 2 credits (4 semester courses) plus a thesis. Practice teaching is not required.  A comprehensive examination is not required. A major essay is typically required subsequent to completion of course work; a thesis option (in place of the major essay) is also available, and requires fewer courses.

Courses Offered: (*required) *Foundations of Language Teaching and Learning; *Research Issues and Methodology in Subsequent Language Education; *6 of the following: Sociolinguistics Applied to Language Teaching and Learning, Pedagogical Grammar: Theory, Research and Practice, Oral/Aural Skills in TESL: Theory, Research and Practice, Reading in TESL: Theory, Research and Practice, Writing in TESL: Theory, Research and Practice, Topics in Second Language Acquisition Theory and Research, Independent Study, Special Issues in Applied Linguistics.

Admission Requirements: The university requires high school (Grade 12/Ontario Academic Course) graduation (average about 70% or better). An undergraduate degree in English, English Linguistics, TESL or a comparable field is required to enter the program. Nonnative speakers of English must have one of a TOEFL score of 600, (CBT 250; iBT 100) with a TWE score of 5.0, plus a TSE score of 55; an IELTS score of 7 with a writing sub-score of 7); an ITELP score of 580. An oral interview may be required of international applicants. 

Tuition, Fees, and Aid: For domestic students offered direct entry, CAD$5,000 per year (approximately); for international students offered direct entry, CAD$13,000 per year. For domestic or international students offered bridged entry, CAD$18,000 for 15 months (approximately). Graduate fellowships, research fellowships, bursaries and teaching assistantships are available.

General: Program completion is within 12 months (15 months for bridged entry students). The program has a 10-week summer bridging program for bridged entry students, including academic and socio-cultural orientation. There are research opportunities with the Intensive English Language Program. 
     None of this program is available via distance learning. 
     The university has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers.
