General: The Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Specialization in GDER is aimed at providing students with the theoretical knowledge, skills and awareness necessary for professional excellence for both English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching and learning contexts. Programs in this field seek to meet the needs of teachers of ESL/EFL in the two streams of Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K-12) school systems as well as in adult contexts. TESL recognizes two distinct educational routes for graduate study. The course-based route (MEd, Graduate Diploma, and Graduate Certificate) focuses directly on career-oriented professionalization in the field of ESL and EFL. TESL course-based programs are offered on-campus and online. The thesis-based route (PhD, EdD, MA) is designed for individuals who are intent on making an original contribution of research to knowledge in the field. Degrees are designed for teachers who wish to specialize in the area of EFL/ESL, university graduates who are intent on establishing new career directions and for individuals who are seeking to upgrade their professional and academic qualifications to meet international standards. Our students are generally experienced ESL teachers from Canada and around the world.
The program leads to a provincial credential in TESOL.
Most of the courses noted above are available in an online format through the Blackboard course application.
