Degree Offered: MA in linguistics with general or TESL track.
Length of Program: 3 semesters to 2 years. Students may be full-time or part-time and may begin the program at the beginning of any semester.
Program Requirements: 30 semester units. Competence in a language other than English is required for native speakers of English. Students may complete the program via a comprehensive examination or through submission of a thesis. Only those who achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher in the first 18 units are eligible to select the thesis option.
Courses Offered: (*required for TESL track) *Seminar in Syntax; *Seminar in Phonology; *Cognitive Linguistics OR Discourse Analysis; *Seminar in Second Language Acquisition; *Reading and Writing Issues in ESL; *Listening and Speaking Issues in ESL; *Structures of English for ESL/EFL Teaching; at least one course in methods of ESL, elementary education, secondary education, or adult education.

Admission Requirements: Students must have an undergraduate GPA of at least 2.85 with a minimum of 3.0 in the last 60 units. Students whose overall undergraduate GPA is lower than 3.0 must take the GRE and score at the 50th percentile or higher on at least one GRE subtest.
Nonnative speakers of English must have a TOEFL score of 563 (CBT 223; iBT 85).
Tuition, Fees, and Aid: For in-state students, US$1,014 per semester for 0-6 units, US$1,632 per semester for 6.1 or more units; for out-of-state students, US$339 per unit in addition. Tuition includes all fees. Loans and scholarships are available.
General: Students who enter with an undergraduate major in other than linguistics may be asked to complete as many as 18 units (6 courses) in core linguistics courses (Introduction to Linguistics, Phonetics/Phonology, Morphology/Syntax, Semantics/Pragmatics, Language Acquisition and Development, Sociolinguistics). The MA program requires all students to take 3 courses in general linguistics courses and students can complete the 30-unit degree in either a general track or a TESL track. Virtually all courses are offered in the late afternoon and evenings so that students may continue working while pursuing a degree. Courses can be used to satisfy requirements in teaching credential programs. Qualified fully classified graduate students may apply for consideration as teaching associates in the Department of English to teach freshman composition. Approximately 15 students received MAs in 2005. Approximately 20 students completed the program in 2004-2006. Students have the opportunity to do semesters or full years abroad through International Programs or to compete for opportunities to teach in China during the summer through the China Programs.
The university has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers administered through the auspices of the College of Extended Learning.
