Degree Offered: MA in Applied Language Studies.

Length of Program: 1or 2 years. Students may be full-time or part-time and begin their study at the beginning of the fall semester.

Program Requirements: 5.0 credits (each one-semester course is 0.5 credits). There are 3 program options: thesis option (3.0 course credits plus thesis), research essay options (4.0 course credits plus research essay), or coursework option (5.0 course credits). Competence in a language other than English is not required. Neither practice teaching nor a comprehensive examination is required.

Admission Requirements: The program normally requires a 4-year BA (honours) degree in a discipline involving the analysis of language or the study of language use or learning, or a 3-year BA in a relevant discipline plus a BEd or 1-year certificate in TESL. Students must have at least B+ standing in related courses and Bƒo overall in their academic work. There is a qualifying year program for students without the required background or standing.

Tuition, Fees, and Aid: For domestic students, CAD$ 4363.71 per academic year; for others, CAD$10,059.71 per academic year. Teaching assistantships and scholarships are available.

General: Applied language studies focus on language learning, especially the acquisition of literacy and second languages, in a variety of academic and workplace contexts. The program is geared toward both practitioners and students wishing to pursue doctoral work in related areas.  It is aimed at enhancing their understanding of discourse processes and social contexts for language use, first and second language acquisition and development, and educational contexts for and testing of such acquisition. Students may choose either a concentration in the Teaching and Acquisition of Additional Languages, or the   Nature, Acquisition and Teaching of Written Discourse/Literacies, or a combination of both fields.
     The university has an intensive English language program for nonnative speakers.
